Question: Do you really have to cut yourself and dress emo and listen to emo music to be emo!?
(Posted by: Wonder on 2008-05-03 22:41:03)
Because I believe I am emo because I am an emotional person and I am very sad at the fact I cannot be myself yet since I am gay in high school! Also I have allot of other problems and I like to express it by typing it out.... ( My friends call themselves emo and they do not do most of the stuff I mentioned above) I didn't say I cut myself smartie! I was asking do you have to do all of this stupid stuff to be emotional! so yeah I agree it is dumb to day I listen to th music I cur myself I dress it so I am emo! I think that is ridiculous! and I feel if your emotional your emotional and I am emotional! |

I think that you and your friends need to grow up a little. Seriously, labeling yourself? Do you just do it because you think it's cool? It seems immature to me. "Emo " is a word, in my opinion, that is used to classify a certain appearance, emotion(s), ect, but should not be used to label a person as a whole. You may have an "emo " hairstyle, or you might like "emo " music, but cutting yourself is a very serious matter and should not be done to try to fit a label. That's just stupid. "Oh, I cut myself, now I'm part of the group! Yeah! " Give me a break. Listen to the music that YOU like. Wear the clothes that YOU like. Wear your hair how YOU like it. Don't label yourself.. just be who YOU are. |

This is just another example of someone in the music press coining a new label to describe a new type of emotional punk music. The kids who get labelled emo are often goth or scene or a combination of these. I stand up for everybodies right to be individual and I am anti-labels. Self harming is a widespread fad amongst teens who use it for the shock factor and to deal with their problems in the same way that earlier generations used cigarettes or booze. It is serious and leaves physical and emotional scars. Conforming to stereotypes is not necessary or desirable. |
