Question: This is a real question for people who dress emo--?

My niece, age 14, dresses emo and likes all sorts of emo- ish stuff. She seems withdrawn and dark most days, very smart, polite, etc. How do I know when to worry about her? She has told her mom she doesn't cut, but she wears long pants/ sleeves. Please don't give me a lecture about how "not everybody emo does that stuff "- - I know that. That's why I'm asking. How do I know when to worry? She's not likely to share anything like that with her mom/ dad. Is there something I can do to support her other than accepting her style (which I do, and I've told her that). Thanks for your help- - I appreciate it.

Take her to a concert of a band she likes. It'll be a great opportunity for you to learn more about her and what she likes, and the trip to and from the concert will be a great chance to really talk to her and have her assure you that you don't have to worry. Make sure you stress that you love her and that you're always there for her, and that you don't "fear for her life " or think of her as a problem child. Let her know that you accept her.

Let her know that you're there if she wants to talk, and that help is always available. Usually "emo's " make up problems that they have and cut anyway just to follow suit with all the other "emo's ". Theres not much else you can do, but if you're really worried, tell her parents and they'll keep a good close eye on her.

There is one easy way to find out if your niece is cutting. Ask her. If she say's no. Trust her. Sometimes people only cut to see if anyone will notice. If your still not sure grab both her wrist two ar three times a week. If she flinches, she's cutting. If she is don't freak out. Just ask her way. If she doesn't spill leave it alone. She'll come around.

If she's acting down about everything, then its not a style. It's a problem. Even if she's just doing it to "fit " into that style, it's still a problem that should be checked out. If it's just the way that she dresses, then thats fine. So start worrying when she starts acting different, and depressed. Bc somethings making her act that way..

Trust me, you're making a big deal out of nothing. you say that you're not, but becoming so concerned about a dress style proves that you actually are. most "emo " (what ever the hell that is) dressers don't cut. trust me, you'll be able to clearly see it in her if something was wrong, just like you'd be able to do with anyone else.

Shes probably going through a phase, cause i know i went through it not too long ago, you shouldn't worry too much unless it has been going on for more than 2 years. just be careful of what you do/ say cause she'll probably think you're trying to help her when she feels like nothing is wrong. i really really hope it works out -Becca <3

Well I "dress " emo and I did cut twice. But that's because I'm psycho and stressed. Your niece may want to just fit in. But than again I too am withdrawn (shy), smart (pre AP classes) and polite. Talk to her.
