Not emo but I think I can empathise. I've been close to cutting before. Um I think it's because if everywhere you turn, you face another problem (or so called problem) then you kinda feel like hurting yourself to make you forget about other problems ... i dunno i can't explain it but I definitely know the feeling. sorry :(

People who cut for fashion are doing it for attention and pathetic. The people who actually cut do not wave it about. Honestly, people who cut don't really want anybody to know about it. People who self-harm aren't technically part of the emo crowd; many people self-harm no matter how they dress or what "crowd " they fit into. Actual self-harm is a part of deeper psychological problems such as depression, bipolar disorder, anorexia nervosa, and other psychological disorders. When a person self-harms, it is because they have a need to feel better that they can't find in any other way. Cutting, burning, etc, does two things: 1) it releases endorphins, which your body does naturally when confronted with pain, which makes the person feel better, and 2) feeling physical pain can draw the person's mind away from the emotional pain. Sometimes, people who have psychotic disorders use it as a method of "connecting " back to their body when they feel that they have lost sense of reality; the physical pain can sort of "jolt " you back into something real and helps you feel like you have a grip on reality. Self-harm is not a constructive way for dealing with problems and many people who do harm eventually go into therapy or some form of treatment for their problems so they can stop and finally reach some peace; those who do not get treatment for it often worsen over time and their problems get worse than just cutting. Cutting has somewhat colloquially been associated with the emo crowd, but ANYBODY can be a cutter--anybody. There are probably people that you know that you would NEVER assume cut because they don't look emo, but they are. Anybody can have psychological problems, no matter what group they fit into. Somebody who seriously self-harms has a psychological problem. The kids who do it and flash it around to be cool are making light of a very, very serious problem.

I'm not emo or anything, but a lot of people cut themselves or hurt themselves in other manners because they're depressed or have other mood problems. stereotyping cutting as "emo " is wrong. it's a real problem for a lot of people, and it can even become an addiction. however, people who cut themselves to fit in with a certain social group are just stupid. people who have real psychological problems may hurt themselves because it makes them feel better, it helps relieve stress, it takes away from the emotional pain they're dealing with, they feel like they need to punish themselves, etc. i find that not a lot of people consider themselves "emo " anymore. that was more of a two year ago sort of thing. people who try to fit into a stereotype just have low self esteem and feel like they need to find a place to fit in.

EMO is such a convoluted, over used and actually ridiculous way of describing was formally known simply as goth sub culture. Now, apparently they have to divide sub cultures into their little categories to make the participants feel unique. EMO...is just a person who enjoy music, fashion, makeup and or multimedia that revolves around goth culture(without the association to Satanic culture or death metal..commom stereotypes for most goths) I've found that it's just a poser sub culture..they wear their bangs long in the front...listen to music with sad or tragic lyrics, wear makeup and flock to hot topic for all their cultural needs lmao Honestly...atleast gothic people don't HAVE to be depressed or even dark...just dress a certain way. EMO is just a prepy kids version of gothic culture. p.s I'm not goth or EMO..I just hate EMO stuff.

Some people do it as it seems to be the only thing they can control, if things in their life are going against them. Or it might be to take their mind of the emotional pain. Mine was the first reason but i really regret it now. "Don't judge me by the scars on my arm, instead help me to throw away the blade "

I was 13 years old when i started cutting my wrists. it made me think that if i had pain there i wouldnt have it in my heart. i was so sad and my life was falling apart and i felt that death was the only way out. i started with baby steps like "accidently " putting my hands on the stove or chopping vegetables the wrong way. it didnt help me but then i thought it was because my stepps werent gerastic enough. so then it got serious. i took scissors to my wrists and then boxcutters and finally the day came where i went into a deep deppression for a while. i was only 13 @ the time. my parent started noticing my cuts. i cut deep one day and i had no choice but to tell my parents. Baissicly it is to get attention in some cases, or in others it is to focus your pain on some thing real. something that will heal. you think your heart wount and maybe not so you try to focus on a new pain one where you can trust it to not let you down not keep you on guessing. i am now 14 and i have seen therapists to help me. some people dont have that....i am one of the lucky ones.

Very insulting to think that all emo people cut them selfs

You are officially the stupidest person i have met, perhaps all day, and i live near manchester. Emo's dont all self harm And not all self harmers are emo. It is a messed up symptom and problem of mental health disorders such as depression anorexia and schizophrenia ( however these are to list a few) The fact that you even answered this question shows the stereotyped nature of todays society. Check out recoveryourlife.com That might clear shit up for you. The people on there, were not all emo, and if you called one of us emo, we would probably hit you with a hammer. Seriously, stop being so bigoted to social sub cultures. Its on a par with saying all chavs are alchoholics, or all gays are pedophiles. Whatever. *rant over*

Mental illness, anything that makes us feel good temporarily, a release - drinking, cutting, drugs etc etc - we know that it will only make things worse in the long run, but it does not matter.

'Emo' is a overused Fashion statement that gets thrown around too much. But as in cutting yourself, some people will cut themselves to fit in with the 'emo' way of life trying to look like they are depressed and what to kill themselves where as if this was true they would of either killed them self already or got help and/ or stoped moaning about it. In other ways some people who genuinly dont lik themselvs tend to cut themselvs or whatever to feel in control of there life and in control of the pain they feel etc, these are the people that seek help silenty and actually want to be helped unlinke the fake 'emo's who brag about there cuts and bruses to anyone who will listen
