"Emo " is actually a music genre. Short for Emotive hardcore. But since I guess that your talking about what it means now, I'll tell you. Anyone, can be "emo ", they can be loved, liked, hated, anything by anyone. But this is the stereotype emo: Always depressed, cuts, suicidal, wears dark makeup and cloths, hates life, listens to hardcore music. That's the stereotype. The stereotype goth is pretty much the same thing w/ out the cutting, hating life, and suicidal. But really anyone can be suicidal, depressed, and cuts. Anyone can wear dark makeup, listen to hardcore music. Anyone can do any of those things that are tagged with being "Emo/ Goth " Anyone who cuts is either doing it for attention or a cry for help. (And yes, there is a difference between "Attention Seeking " and a "Cry for Help ") Anyone who cuts and will willingly show off the cuts and "brag " about it will most likely be doing it for attention. Anyone who is doing it for a cry for help will not want to show off the cuts and will more likely keep it a secret (With the exception of a few close friends). Most of the time people don't like them because of the lame stereotype about them. But really if you ever get to know one (that is doing it because they like the music, style, they feel like "themselves ") are really nice people who may have some serious problems.
